Solana Funding Rate Explained: Calculate SOL Perpetual Holding Costs
SOL funding is a recurring payment between holders of long and short perpetual positions. It can change your holding cost even when SOL’s price barely moves. A perpetual position is a derivative exposure, not ownership of SOL tokens.
Why check SOL funding now?
On September 25, 2026, OrangeX listed SOL third under Hot derivatives. At approximately 02:15 UTC, its SOLUSDT perpetual page displayed 118.08 USDT, a 24-hour change of +3.34%, and approximately 1.76 billion USDT in 24-hour turnover. The displayed funding rate was +0.0100%. These are platform snapshots, not forecasts or guaranteed settlement rates. See the live SOL contract.
Who pays whom?
- Positive funding: long positions pay short positions.
- Negative funding: short positions pay long positions.
- Unleveraged spot holdings do not incur perpetual funding payments.
Funding helps keep perpetual prices near the underlying market. Its sign alone does not predict SOL’s next move. A positive rate can coexist with falling prices.
Calculate the payment
For a linear USDT-margined position, the payment magnitude is position notional multiplied by the absolute funding rate. Position notional is SOL quantity multiplied by mark price; it is not the margin deposit.
Hypothetical example: 10 SOL × 120 USDT = 1,200 USDT notional. At +0.01%, a long pays 1,200 × 0.0001 = 0.12 USDT for one settlement. At −0.01%, that same long receives 0.12 USDT. These example inputs are not a live quote.
If notional and rate stayed unchanged across three settlements, the payer’s total would be 0.36 USDT. In reality, recalculate each settlement. Increasing leverage while keeping notional unchanged does not reduce the funding amount; it increases that amount relative to initial margin.
Check the clock and total cost
OrangeX’s funding guide describes settlements at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC. Check the SOL contract’s current countdown and rules, as schedules and rates may change. An indicated rate before settlement can update. Trading fees and slippage are separate costs.
Before holding a position across settlement:
- Confirm the contract, position direction, notional and next funding time.
- Check the current rate and funding history, rather than annualizing a single observation.
- Review available margin and liquidation exposure. Funding receipts do not protect against price losses.
- Compare total holding costs with unleveraged spot exposure if ownership is your objective.
Common question: does negative funding mean SOL will rise?
No. It identifies the payment direction, not a reliable price forecast. Receiving funding can be outweighed by an adverse price move, liquidation or execution costs. This guide is educational, not a recommendation to open a position.
