Token Utility and Value Accrual: Trace Who Actually Benefits

A project can provide a useful service without every unit of activity creating demand for its token. Token utility describes what a token can do. Value accrual asks how that activity might affect holders through demand, supply or enforceable rights. Those questions overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Start with the live mechanism and its beneficiaries. A roadmap, governance proposal or marketing description is not evidence that a distribution rule is already operating.

Follow the payment from user to recipient

Imagine a hypothetical service that processes 1 million transactions, each costing 0.01 units of a stablecoin. Users pay 10,000 stablecoin units in total. If those payments go entirely to service operators and do not require the project's token, transaction growth alone does not establish direct token demand.

Now imagine users must acquire tokens to pay. Ask whether they hold a meaningful balance or purchase immediately before use, and whether recipients retain or sell the tokens. Mandatory payment is a mechanism to investigate, not an automatic price forecast.

These examples are invented to separate flows, not estimates for any named project.

Separate three different functions

  • Payment utility can connect usage with token spending, depending on settlement rules and substitutes.
  • Staking can require collateral or participation, but examine issuance, lock conditions, slashing and the source of rewards.
  • Governance can confer voting influence without granting a legal ownership interest or an automatic claim on revenue.

Do not label all rewards “yield from revenue.” A token distribution funded by new issuance changes holder balances differently from a payment funded by external customers. Compare the recipient's share of total supply, rather than looking only at the number of tokens received.

Check supply effects without promising price effects

A documented burn can reduce supply relative to a no-burn counterfactual. Net supply also depends on issuance and other relevant changes. A lower supply path does not determine price independently of demand and market conditions.

For a specific example of mechanism documentation, Ethereum's EIP-1559 specifies that the base fee is burned. That statement concerns fee treatment; it is not a promise that every increase in network activity raises ETH's price. This is an example, not a new Ethereum project guide.

For a worked review of purchases and burns, see the buyback analysis. Keep treasury purchases, destroyed tokens and circulating-supply classifications distinct.

Build a short evidence chain

Record the service, payer, settlement asset, recipient, token-holder benefit, activation date and supporting document. Mark conditional benefits explicitly. Check whether rules can change and whether benefits depend on continued subsidies or governance approval.

Finally, separate a sound project description from a valuation conclusion. A useful product can still have a highly diluted token, weak holder rights or a price that already reflects optimistic expectations. On the OrangeX.com markets page, confirm the actual asset and product before acting; trading availability does not validate the economic thesis. The aim is to make every step from usage to holder benefit inspectable.
